WORK INCLUDES
Sheet metal workers use specialized equipment either in the field or in a shop environment to measure, cut, form, and weld sheets of metal for use in a variety of construction purposes—most notably heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for residential, commercial and industrial environments. Requires computational reasoning, improvisational problem solving, mechanical intuition, ability to read blueprints, and communication skills.
Architectural Sheet metal workers produce functional facades and ornamentation out of metal (and additional materials) usually for the exterior of commercial buildings.
HVAC Fabricators & Installers for, fabricate, install, and modify the ductwork for all heating and cooling systems found in residential, commercial, and industrial structures.
Shipbuilders utilize welding qualifications and trade theory to manipulate sheet metal to fabricate the majority of the interior finish work on naval vessels.
Appliance Constructors work in factories and use equipment to design and shape the metal components required to produce residential and commercial appliances.
Precision & Specialty Parts Manufacturers work to create highly complex component parts that have strict operating requirements for advanced applications like technology or defense.
APPRENTICESHIP & TRAINING
To join an apprenticeship program you must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED and the physical ability to do the work.
Program includes 8,000 hours (approximately 4 years) of on-the-job training and about 180 hours of related instruction each year. During this period, the JATC Committee, upon request of either party, will annul the apprenticeship agreement
On-the-job training is completed by the Apprentice working full-time with a contractor, and Related Training is completed at training facilities. There is no charge for tuition. Apprentices are supplied with books each school year.
